This chapter charts the role of storytelling in the event-making of the Battle of Lepanto in the early 1570s. Narration is of crucial significance in terms of how events are perceived, experienced and addressed, and for the ways in which they are believed to have a history and shape the future course of events. By studying the ways in which Spanish or pro-Spanish protagonists in the early 1570s transformed Lepanto into arguments putting forth certain interpretations of the battle, this chapter explores the social world of storytelling and its relationship with printing, diplomacy, festivities and material culture.
