Abstract This chapter introduces the first crusade narratives, which are the Solomon bar Simson Chronicle, the Eliezer bar Nathan Chronicle, and the Mainz Anonymous. These three narratives present the events of late spring and early summer 1096 and have attracted so far the most attention. These narratives are also discussed in detail in the next few chapters. The discussion shows that these narratives are considered as relevant historical artifacts, and that early studies of these three Hebrew narratives focused on technical matters, most especially the relationships among the texts and the dating of the texts. The latest concern however, has been on the facticity of the accounts presented in these narratives.
