Abstract Between 1830 and 1880 the ulama of Damascus suffered a decline in status and material fortunes. That decline came as an effect of the Ottoman Empire’s administrative reform movement and changes in cultural life. Political developments in the Ottoman Empire combined with social and economic change to further exacerbate the ulama’s sensitivity to decline. To comprehend their predicament requires an account of their place in Damascene society and the impact of political events and economic trends on Damascus.
