The Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis 1559 On 2 and 3 April 1559 France signed peace treaties in Cateau-Cambrésis with England and Spain. In the first it acquired Calais, the last English possession on the continent, for eight years. In the second treaty, France recognized the rights of the Spanish king in Italy, especially in Milan and Naples. France thereby relinquished claims that had been at the centre of a struggle for European supremacy between Charles V and the French kings for four decades. The peace was advantageous for Spain, but much less so for France since it represented an abrupt break with traditional French foreign policy. The significance of the peace of Cateau-Cambrésis thus only becomes clear when viewed in the context of the complex prehistory of Habsburg-Valois conflict. It was an attempt to come to a new form of coexistence, certainly prompted by the force of economic circumstances, but perhaps even more by desire to concentrate domestically on the fight against "heresy".
