The Peace Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis, despite being one of the most important agreements of its kind in 16th-century Europe, has not been the source of exhaustive research. This is all the more surprising given the various layers possible for analysis. One of these is the rhetorical layer. As an official document, the text of the peace treaty was very carefully prepared linguistically to ensure that its rhetoric did not deviate from the ideological line set by its issuers. It is the rhetoric, narrowed down to religious aspects, that is the purpose of this article. By analysing the relevant passages, the question of what religious rhetoric was, what arguments were used, what their symbolic layer was, and what goals were declared through its use will be answered.
