The thirty years before the accession of Henri IV to the French throne in 1589 were torn by social and religious conflict, erupting from time to time into bitter spells of civil war - the ‘wars of religion’ as they have been styled. During the preceding half of the sixteenth century much of Europe had been involved in the Italian wars, a series of international confrontations which had inspired Frenchmen to forget their internal differences and unite behind their two strong kings, François I and Henri II. When the wars were ended by the Peace of Câteau-Cambrésis in 1559, the same year in which Henri II met his untimely and acci-dental death, the country was deprived of a national purpose and dissident elements came to the fore. All the constituents of civil war were present in the succeeding years: a dissenting religious minority, whose influence had grown unchecked during the Italian wars but whose very existence was abhorrent to a Catholic monarch bearing the title of ‘Most Christian King’; a series of weak or child rulers, and at times the regency of a woman and a foreigner - the Queen-Mother Catherine de Medici; powerful aristocratic factions and privileged social groups who were eager to gain authority by supporting the feeble crown against other opponents.
