At first glance, a fatal skirmish in Fife appears to be a minor incident in the male-dominated world of warfare and broken politics during the Marian civil war. In this chapter, this narrative is transformed when four women behind that confrontation are revealed. Three noblewomen based in Fife, Margaret Erskine, Lady Lochleven, Margaret Beaton, Lady Reres and Annas Keith, countess of Moray, were connected to each other and to Mary, Queen of Scots. Together, they provide a fascinating glimpse of the female networks running through regional society that also encompassed strong links to the royal court and government. The severing of the previously close relationships of those four women throws new light on the complex politics of the Queen's personal rule, the agency of noblewomen within her kingdom and the slaughter of two men in April 1570.
