The objective of this study is to highlight the importance of common people to significant historical events by examining the specific case of the 1586-1587 Babington Plot. By using social network and historical methods of analysis, we can see the importance of the actions of commoners within the revelation and dismantling of the plot against Queen Elizabeth I of England. The result of the case study is the recognition not only of the historical importance of common actors to the resolution of the plot itself and to the development of a proto-democratic form of government bureaucracy, but also the understanding that leaders with referent and hierarchical power cannot be successful without the efforts and support of followers acting as leaders in their own right. The Babington Plot provides us with an example of invisible leadership in which some of the most important figures are those who are largely unrecognized by history.
