Beginning with Genesis, heaven and earth is a very important expression and concept throughout the Old Testament (OT). The use of heaven and earth is quite common in many parts of the Second Temple literature. This is not surprising in light of how indebted this literature is to the weighty traditions of the Hebrew Bible. The apocalyptic literature provides ample opportunity for the heaven and earth theme to multiply, with its emphasis on heavenly realm in distinction from earthly. In addition to the frequent use of plural forms of οὐρανός, Matthew's idiolectic style is also reflected in his emphasis on the word pair, heaven and earth. This chapter surveys the Jewish literary context for the meaning of this important phrase, tracing this central theme in the OT and Second Temple literature as a backdrop to examine how Matthew adapts and employs this word pair. Keywords: οὐρανός; Genesis; Hebrew Bible; Jewish literary context; Matthew; Old Testament (OT); Second Temple Literature
