B?n as an alternative to phyi dar Buddhism, in its subaltern Tibetan niches, typically reacts to and emulates (dominant) Buddhist culture. Dominant Tibetan Buddhist cultural presence is generally perceived, and also consciously construed, as 'foreign' to Tibet. Conquering and cultivating its subaltern niche, B?n consequently construes its alternative identities polemically as 'non-foreign', or at least as 'less foreign'. These and other internal contradictions clearly point to the ad hoc dialogic character of Bon religious historical identity narratives, which, as said, fundamentally prioritise structures and potentials for meaning over historical fact.
