Abstract This chapter argues that decolonization was a profoundly transformative experience for Anglicanism. A first section explores how decolonization presented new uncertainties for Anglican missionary churches, and how, as representatives of the Established Church in the imperial state, British Anglican leaders sought to act as the ‘nation’s conscience’, becoming involved in colonial political issues. Secondly, the chapter turns to consider a decolonization process within Anglicanism, as the Church’s own institutional structures were adapted to the ideological and political currents of the period. A final section explores the significance of other global transformations associated with decolonization for the Anglican Communion and also the Church of England.
