Abstract This chapter traces the evolution of arguments within Western Anglicanism over human sexuality, and especially homosexuality, from a situation of broad consensus at the beginning of the twentieth century to open conflict at the end. Late in the twentieth century relations among Anglicans fractured over the issue of homosexuality. ‘Progressive’ Anglicans in the global North began to recognize same-gender relations and to welcome gay persons into ordained ministry. ‘Traditionalist’ Anglicans, in the global South as well as the North, created alternative coalitions claiming to be genuinely Christian and Anglican. Homosexuality subsumed issues of Anglicanism’s relation to culture, colonial heritage, and pastoral ministry. The opposed factions intended to create spheres of pure belief and practice, thus enshrining division.
