Abstract This chapter traces historically the ecclesial meaning of the entity known as ‘the Anglican Communion’. It focuses on the use of the term ‘communion’ as the product of English Protestant self-identity, and then in particular missionary work in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The decisive change in Anglican self-understanding occurred in the post-war period of decolonization. The internationalizing character of the Anglican Communion mapped on to changing political contexts of the period. Changes in these contexts have led more recently to contested understandings of communion that Anglicans were struggling to sort out in the early twenty-first century, in the process exemplifying a particular Christian approach to cultural pluralism.
