Abstract This chapter explores the major themes characteristic of twentieth-century Anglicanism in North America. After situating the North American Churches in the context of broad religious, cultural, and social trends, it focuses in particular on the apparent ‘liberal–conservative impasse’ which brought with it deep polarization and the threat of schism. Through this lens, the chapter traces tensions in North American Anglicanism through such themes as institutional racism, women and the episcopacy, and human sexuality. Foremost in the analysis is the question of how the Church adapted to the theological challenges and changes of the age, enduring a period of profound internal conflict and schism.
