Abstract This chapter examines Scientology's affinities with, and roots in, Buddhism and Hinduism, and its employment of technological language. This is followed by a historical section on the transition from Dianetics to Scientology proper, and concludes with specific comparisons and contrasts between Scientology terminology and standard Western theological concepts — research versus revelation, standardness versus infallibility/inerrancy, and engrams versus sin.
