This chapter focuses on the development of the Church of Scientology in Sweden from its inception in 1969, and how it has adapted to the Swedish religious climate. The Church of Scientology spread quickly across Sweden with a number of centers established in various cities. Its active role in society has made the Church of Scientology one of the most well known New Religious Movements (NRMs) in Sweden, but it has also attracted a lot of negative attention. Many of the misconceptions and prejudices found among the public often stem from the yellow press, which has accused the Church of Scientology of being manipulative and dishonest. There are two particular events that stand out in the history of Swedish Scientology which attracted a lot of attention even from the more respectable media: the “E-Meter case” in the 1970s and the controversy over the “Bible of Scientology” during the late 1990s.
