This chapter will focus on all Peckinpah Westerns such as Ride the High Country, Major Dundee, The Wild Bunch, and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid to emphasize the Gothic elements that occur in their construction. Duality, contrasts between civilization and wilderness, the growing forms of institutional corruption in American society are all part of a national Gothic Peckinpah develops in his Western films that are very different from the traditional forms of Ford and Hawks. Gothic elements appear in RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY with the division between Hornitos and Coarsegold that in fact mirror each other. Also, as R.G. Armstrong notes, MAJOR DUDEE contains many parallels to MOBY DICK and PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID reveals many elements of this tradition such as Garrett’s future assassin named Poe. He was a real-life character, but his surname certainly resonates in the film.
