Georgian Modernism, a force in the 1910s and 1920s, can be seen as a project of the country’s cultural relocation from the periphery of the Russian Empire to Europe. The younger generation of Georgian writers began a process of cultural modernization and Westernization, which were seen as interdependent goals. The adoption of a Modernist aestheticism was declared to be the aim of this cultural rebirth, and it was announced to be of national and societal importance. Georgian Modernism relocated Georgian culture on the European cultural map through the establishment of a European-style Modernist environment. This also supported the relocation of Georgia within Europe on the political map, while a Western-style free democratic state was formed in 1918, with the establishment of the Georgian Democratic Republic (1918–1921) being announced. Modernist cultural choices had an impact on the political and social choices made by the Georgian nation in the 20th century;
