Arrangement of the English-Hawaiian DictionaryThe glosses are arranged in order of approximate frequency of use. Some entries are quite detailed.Extremely rare glosses are given last, often preceded by "Also": or "Rare":Caution is urged in use of Hawaiian words that one may find in the English-Hawaiian section. Many have two or more meanings, some of which may have unfavorable connotations (for example, hala, 'ole, paoa) or prove embarrassing (see kali, lua). For this reason one must look up any Hawaiian word listed on the English side and note all its possible meanings before using it.The English-Hawaiian section is in some ways an "index" to Hawaiian words, but remember:Malama opa 'oe.'Be careful lest the result be disastrous to you.' (Saying 2122 in Pukui 1983).
