There are few visible signs remaining to indicate that this part of the country was once the home of a thriving iron and steel industry. Yet in 1878 more than 40% of the 112 converters installed in Britain were located in the North West (see Fig. 1) and in 1889, when Bessemer steel production reached a peak of 2 175 000 ingot tonnes, approximately one sixth of the total was produced in the North West of England. Furthermore, the acid converter process was operated continuously here for over 100 years, until the last heats were blown in 1974.
