Wisely planning of water resources is extremely important where water is scarce, and its distribution is unbalanced. Considering the needs of present and future generations, holistic approach for social, economic and environmental dimensions is core of sustainable development. Improvement of water resources and protection have been prioritized when environmental degradation was severe and visible at the last quarter of the 20st century. Debates on sustainability of water resources were focused on management of water resources in basin scale and prevention of water pollution, and planning through ensuring the future needs. As a result, water as a scarce resource is aimed to be planned through the basin scale approach. In line with this approach, water policies particularly under the EU Water Framework Directive that entered into force in 2000, prioritize protection, improvement and utilization of water resources through river basin management plans for our region. There is a certain need to planning wisely of water management in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus where water resources are limited and inadequate, evaporation is high and water demand is increasing. In this study current water status and water management structure will be assessed, and the master plan studies after the 2004 will be referred and suggestions for water management are to be presented
