This article provides information about a letter by Jamshid Kashi, one of the leading representatives of the School of Mathematics founded by Uluğ Bey in Samarkand. Thanks to this letter of Jamshid Kashi, which contains important information about Uluğ Bey’s interest in science, the development of the Observatory and the Schools of Mathematics and Astronomy that he established in Samarkand, it is clear what kind of progress science had made in the Timurid country. In addition, the equipment of the scientists who came together under the patronage of Uluğ Bey, the content of the scientific debates and the quality of the works put forward also reveal the extraordinary potential of Uluğ Bey as a scholar-ruler. The statements in Jamshid Kashi’s letter from Samarkand to his father in Kāshān play a major role in emphasizing the importance of the scientific and cultural heritage of Uluğ Bey, who is an inspiration for today’s youth with his creative work, knowledge and the scientists he patronized.
