This chapter explores the ways in which Emmanuel Macron has used the powers granted to the President of the Republic since his election on 7 May 2017. The author's analysis answers the central question: what kind of holder of office has this youngest President of the French Republic made, having never been previously elected and without any real history of party activism – supported by a movement (En Marche!) that did not even exist a year before the presidential election and promoting a political project claiming to be ‘both left and right’? Strudel highlights three paradoxes (monarchical–populist, Jupiterian–participatory and ‘both left and right’), which she considers to be particularly illuminating, both in shedding light on Macron's presidential project and his exercise of power and in understanding how each of these paradoxes has been worked through over the past seven years of his mandate: through what she describes as personalisation, managerial disintermediation and a rightward shift in his policies and support.
