The purpose of this paper is to review the relationships between Egypt and the Kingdom of Mitanni during the reign of Amenhotep III, King of Egypt. It is commonly accepted that they were peaceful during the reign of Amenhotep III. This article forwards the evidence and suggests a reason for this animosity. The sources for studying the relations between Egypt and Mitanni during the reign of Amenhotep III are numerous and of various genres: The Amarna Letters. Several sources hint, however, that the relationship between Mitanni and Egypt was not idyllic during Amenhotep III's entire reign. Her second claim, that Amenhotep III had anticipated Mitanni's downfall, is based on retrospective knowledge. A hint of motivation concerning Egypt's hostility towards Mitanni can be found in EA 17, ll. The head conspirator Uthi/Pirhi is not identified, but he seems to have become a kind of de facto regent. Keywords: Amenhotep III; Egypt; Mitanni; The Amarna Letters; Tushratta; Uthi/Pirhi
