Two of the most enduring characters in the Anglo-Indian pantheon of villains were the late eighteenth-century rulers of Mysore, Hyder Ali and his son, the infamous Tipu Sultan. Their reputations, in particular that of Tipu, were almost as important in the creation of the India in the late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British imagination as the actual fact of their defeat. No other subcontinental ruler enjoyed the terrifying reputation that Tipu did.
