The foundation of the Ottoman Principality has long attracted the attention of both local and foreign historians. Especially the Abdalan-i Rum issue plays a key role in understanding the founding of the Ottoman Empire. However, some circles in Turkey continue to treat it as a theological issue rather than a historical one. This approach obstructs scientific analysis and approaches and causes historical facts to be overshadowed by ideological obsessions. This study aims to promote an understanding based on historical facts by re-evaluating the role of the Vefa'i Order and important figures, especially Geyikli Baba, Dede Garkın and Sheikh Edebalı, in the foundation of the Ottoman Empire. The importance of a true historical perspective of Ottoman and Turkish history, free from ideological approaches, is emphasized.
