The renewal of Daoism in the 12th century did not take place in the Southern Song but in the Jurchen Jin empire, which included a large half of North China. This renewal was realized through various religious movements, among which the Taiyi, Zhendadao, and Quanzhen schools played a major role until the end of the Mongol Yuan dynasty. After a revival in the 17th century, Quanzhen Daoism is still a major component of Daoism today. The chapter presents the history of these schools, as well as the main lines of their preaching. It stresses in particular the relatively well documented history, religious life, and doctrinal aspects of the first decades of the Quanzhen. As inner alchemy was the core of Quanzhen doctrine and practices, special accent is put on the theory and mysticism of this current of inner alchemy.
