Abstract This chapter discusses the origins and development of Petra (Jordan), between the fourth century bc and the eighth century ad. The city developed as a flourishing Hellenistic capital, reaching its peak at the turn of the era, with monumental expressions of royal power (palace, temples, mausoleum). After the Roman annexation of the Nabataean kingdom in ad 106, Petra turned into a locally important city of Provincia Arabia and went through various historical dynamics reflected by its remains revealed by archaeology. Apart for several religious buildings, a shift toward Petra’s eastern hinterland might explain a seeming slowdown of the public initiatives in the former core of the Nabataean kingdom during the Byzantine period.
