This study presents a detailed epigraphical reassessment of selected Chola-period inscriptions, with particular reference to materials from Sripuranthan (identified in inscriptions as Sriparanthaka Chaturvedimangalam). Drawing upon primary sources including South Indian Inscriptions (SII), Epigraphia Indica, and the Annual Reports on Epigraphy (ARE), the work re-examines questions of titulature, identity, and temple foundation within the Chola polity. The analysis focuses on the designation “Muttaraiyan” (Skt. Mutturāja), arguing for its interpretation as a structured princely title rather than an exclusively clan-based identifier. In this context, the study undertakes a close examination of the Udaiyargudi and Govindaputtur inscriptions, and proposes a prosopographical distinction between individuals bearing similar names and designations. Particular attention is given to the figure styled “Araiyan Sankaranarayanan alias Sola Muttaraiyan,” whose role as temple builder is reassessed through inscriptional, topographical, and institutional evidence. By correlating inscriptional records with surviving site features—especially the identification of Sri Paranthakan Pereri with the present Sripuranthan lake—the study establishes continuity between the early foundation phase of the temple and its later institutional presence under Rajaraja Chola I.
