Benito Mussolini celebrated the tenth anniversary of his 'Revolution'.T he leader of the Fascists and prime minister of the Kingdom of Italy had reached the pinnacleofhis power.As head of the government, he had transformed the Italian constitutional monarchy into aFascist dictatorship -the first genuine Italian contribution to governmental theory since the Renaissance in the view of the late Italian universal historian Giuseppe Galasso. 1 Mussolini's dictatorship wasnot only highly repressivebut also modern, in that it acted to permanently mobilise the population to achievealevel of assent that wasabove all externaland eye-catching.In 1932, aspectacular exhibition wasorganised, the Mostra della Rivoluzione fascista,which attracted millions of visitors from Italy and abroad.Its aim wast oh ighlight the history and achievements of the first Fascist decade. 2 To that end, the exhibition centre wasprovided with afaçade in avantgardistic style.In keeping with his own self-image and rhetoric, Mussolini and his regime always made use of the formulation 'Revolution':t here wasa n inflationary employment of concepts such as the 'Revolution of the Blackshirts', the 'Fascist Revolution',a nd Mussolini himself called the dayh eh ad seized power, 28 October, in ac lear reference to the events in Russia, 'his'" October Revolution".
