Gerrard Winstanley holds a significant place in the history of the commons in England as the leader of the Diggers who led the movement of occupation of St George’s Hill in 1649, repudiating the institution of private property and claiming the earth to be a common treasury for the whole of mankind. Although his movement in favour of an agrarian revolution was coincident with the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland, Winstanley’s Digger writings reveal an astounding erasure of the Irish issue. While his pamphlets are a severe indictment of Cromwell and his government, Winstanley was to celebrate him as the heroic saviour of England on his return from Ireland. The aim of this chapter is not to pass judgement on Winstanley but to attempt to rethink his ambivalence in light of Frédéric Lordon’s Spinozist philosophy of affects in political bodies.
