This article tries to see the new researches on Archaic Miletus from the point of view of the social history of Archaic city-states. It examines the two best documented episodes of the early history of Miletus: the end of the kingship and the conflicts that accompanied it, and the civil strife. Data from the field are set against new understandings of the mechanisms of early colonization and of the place of servile heilotic groups.
