During the interregnum period in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after the death of King Jan III Sobieski, the Sejmik of the Chernihiv Voivodeship exiles participated in three Sejm campaigns (the Convocation, Election, and Coronation), during which its proceedings were documented in the instructions created for ambassadors to the Sejm. Since the sejmik had been held in Volodymyr for almost a half-century, in 1696–1697 most of the ambassadors elected to it were represented by the nobility of the Volhynian Voivodeship. The instructions of the Chernihiv Sejmik before the convocation focused directly on political issues with a significant dominant influence of the opposition forces of the Commonwealth, which opposed the old royal faction. The Sejmik voted for the exclusion of the Piast and opposed the queen dowager Marie Casimire. The Chernihiv Sejmik was probably disrupted on the eve of the Election Sejm, although there is no information about that, and neither about the support of the future King August II by the Chernihiv residents. Part of the nobility could take the side of the Łowicz rebellion, but by the Coronation Sejm, the Sejmik of the Chernihiv Voivodeship fully supported the future king August II. The instructions drawn up at the pre-coronation Sejmik focused more on private and specific to this community issues.
