Italian nationalist Giuseppe Garibaldi, along with GiuseppeMazzini and Camillo Benso di cavour, led the struggle for Italian unification in the nineteenth century. Leading a band of guerrilla fighters, Garibaldi overthrew the monarchy in Naples, allowing the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy. Garibaldi was born on July 4, 1807, in Nice. Sailing the Mediterranean, Garibaldi learned of Italian nationalist organizations, including Young Italy, an organization founded by Mazzini and dedicated to the unification of Italy. In 1848, Garibaldi returned to Italy to take part in the revolutions that had erupted along the entire peninsula. In May 1860 Garibaldi sailed to Sicily with about 1,000 volunteers. Giuseppe Garibaldi brought the issue of national unification to the forefront of Italian society in the nineteenth century. Garibaldi was a charismatic leader and romantic revolutionary who inspired similar nationalist movements in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
