Abstract The catastrophe of Muret plunged the Crown of Aragon into its first major crisis. The new king was a child of five in the custody of his father's conqueror at Carcassonne. The fiscal resources were exhausted: James I later declared that his father had pledged all his revenues and given away most of his knights' fiefs. The barons and townspeople felt exploited and deceived; it was a dangerous situation in need of the remedy of prompt and prudent leadership. This chapter discusses the early years (1213–1228), conquests and the conqueror (1228–1276); and institutions, societies, and economies (1213–1276).
