Abstract Chapter 3 focuses on the architecture of the Military Palace of Shalmaneser III in Kalḫu (otherwise known as the ekal mašarti, Review Palace, or Fort Shalmaneser). It describes the palace as the centre of a much larger military complex. The Palace housed some of the elite functions associated with the Assyrian army, but also contained an almost complete ‘normal’ palace in its southern part, which contained most of the spaces also found in Ashurnasirpal’s Northwest Palace, located a short distance away in the same city. Shalmaneser’s palace, however, seems to represent a more flexible way of organizing the palace into a system of courtyards and corridors. The chapter argues that the similarity between the two palaces probably reflects the extensive minimal requirements associated with the activities of the king, members of the royal family, and other high functionaries.
